If you happen to find yourself exploring the quaint city of Picayune on a weekend afternoon, you’ll be surprised at a number of quality eateries scattered across town. Located right off of Interstate 59 about one hour north of New Orleans, this is the perfect spot to pull off for lunch on your drive into the city. With all the great sandwich shops packed into this little town, you’ll need help deciding just where to go, so here are three great choices.

Frostop

Located just off of Interstate 59 in Picayune, Frostop is a local favorite. As you arrive, you’ll notice the outside isn’t much to look at, but it doesn’t even matter because the magic is on the inside. Frostop offers a full menu of southern fried favorites, but it’s renowned for its po’boy sandwiches.

The shrimp po’boy is worth the visit alone. This sandwich is a feat of culinary and architectural wonder. It’s piled high with so much shrimp that you’ll scratch your head trying to figure out how it stays put together.

If shrimp isn’t your thing, try the roast beef po’boy. This sandwich is prepared right in front of your eyes and is served on a hoagie roll dripping in gravy. You’ll have to come to terms with the fact that there’s no clean way to eat this massive sandwich. However, your messy face and shirt will be well worth the sacrifice.

Be sure to grab one of Frostop’s milkshakes after dinner, which are nearly as famous as the po’boys.

Chick N Stick

This gem of a restaurant shares turf with a gas station, but don’t you dare let that deter you from a visit. Inside you’ll find a clean atmosphere and helpful staff, but that’s just a tiny part of what makes Chick N Stick so special. The sausage po’boy sandwich is to die for and comes served with crisply fried sausage, pickles, tomato, lettuce, and cheese.

If you’re looking for something a bit more indulgent, order the surf n’ turf sandwich. This buttery piece of heaven consists of lobster, steak, and mozzarella lovingly stuffed into a sandwich roll.

Whatever item you decide on, the food here is so good you’ll leave wondering, “If eating in a gas station is so wrong, who wants to be right?”

North 11

As the name suggests, this small eatery is located right on Highway 11 just north of downtown Picayune. If you happen upon this little lunch joint during the middle of the day, you’ll likely find the place busting at the seams with customers. Shuffle your way in and claim a spot because you’re in for a treat.

The menu is packed full of food so good you’ll have to lie to your mom when you tell her she’s your favorite cook. The burgers here are all-stars. The banging bayou burger won’t disappoint with 8 ounces of fresh ground beef, gooey melted cheese, bacon, fried jalapeno, roast beef gravy, and red onion. Honestly, any burger on the menu will make your tummy smile.

Wash it down with their ever so sweet tea, because you are in Mississippi, after all. Be sure to check out their Facebook page before your visit, as they post daily specials.
